Sofia overnights in hotels fell in 2010
The number of overnight stays in Sofia hotels was 1.117 million in 2010, down by about 140 000 compared with the past five years, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported on February 6 2011, citing figures by municipal company Tourist Servicing.
The decrease was attributed to the global economic and financial crisis, which led to a drop in the number of local and foreign tourists.
Over the past five years, overnight stays by Bulgarians in hotels in the capital city fell by about 90 000, while the number of foreigners' overnights dropped by 50 000.
Most foreign tourists came from Greece and Germany, spending on average two days in Sofia hotels. Guests from Turkey, Spain and Romania were fewer in 2010, but with an average stay of more than two days.
The largest number of overnights was registered by the four-star Dedeman Princess hotel in 2010, over 94 000, while five-star hotels Kempinski Hotel Zografski and Sheraton recorded the biggest annual increases in stays of about 11 000 and 12 000, respectively.
Among the five-star hotels to witness a rise in overnights in the past year were also Radisson and Hilton
